Description
Garcia's band consists of Garcia, the Harem Stallion, Greta, a Mare, Orlando a Colt born in 2014, Norma Jean a filly born in 2013 and Millicent a filly born in 2012. Garcia hangs out in the lower ranges of the mountain, unlike most of the other bands. When we first came upon his band, they were at the top of a ridge. Garcia suddenly came from behind us, and proceeded to herd the band to the guzzler (BLM precipitation collection device) where he stopped to get a drink. When herding, he lowered and pointed his nose, driving the mare, colt and fillies in the direction he wanted them to go.
The Pryor Mustangs reside on Pryor Mountains in Wyoming and Montana. The herd of about 170 horses consists of several bands of stallions with mare(s) and offspring, bachelor bands. The herd has probably lived on the mountains since at least the late 1600s. The Pryor herd is verified by DNA analysis to be descended from Colonial Spanish Horses. The herd also has a higher than normal genetic diversity and low inbreeding. They are managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Every four years there is a count. Round-ups do occur, probably about every 4 years, and some horses are adopted. At that time, some mares are also given contraceptives.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
I currently reside in Oregon, an environment rich in nature's graces. I have lived in California and New York, too, and everywhere there is a world of beauty around us, if we care to take the time and look for it.

Wonderful capture of not only the herd but the terrain and the dust thrown up by the hooves! Very interesting description as well!

Wonderful capture, Belinda. Love the rugged landscape and the running foreground horses.
